An aggressive outbreak of severe wildfires has erupted across parts of Crete, striking popular southern coastal regions that—like much of Southern Europe this summer—are experiencing extreme heatwaves, prolonged drought, and heightened wildfire danger. Active Fire Zones & Emergency Evacuations
The most severe fire front is currently raging south of Rethymno in western and central-southern Crete, centered near the mountain village of Krya Vrysi and sweeping toward coastal communities. Driven by violent wind shears exceeding 120 km/h (reaching force 11 on the Beaufort scale), the fire front expanded rapidly past 12 kilometers (7.5 miles), consuming pine forests, olive groves, and agricultural land. Emergency authorities issued mandatory alert messages via the 112 emergency system, prompting the evacuation of roughly 8,000 residents and international holidaymakers overnight.
Further east, along the island’s southeastern coast in the Ierapetra municipality, secondary fire fronts have caused widespread disruption across Ferma, Koutsounari, Achlia, Skinokapsala, and Kakia Skala. Flames crested ridgelines and descended toward coastal accommodations, forcing more than 1,500 guests to flee hotels and holiday rentals. Evacuees were safely transported to temporary emergency shelters in indoor sports arenas in Ierapetra and municipal facilities in neighboring districts.
Where Conditions Are Stabilizing & Reopening
In the resort village of Agia Galini, a major tourism destination within the Agios Vassilios district, emergency crews successfully halted advancing flames less than one kilometer from hotel properties. As wind directions shifted, local authorities confirmed that Agia Galini is now under control. Deputy Regional Governor Maria Lioni and local mayor Yiannis Tatarakis announced that resorts in Agia Galini have officially reopened, allowing displaced tourists and hotel staff to safely return to their lodgings as essential services are restored.
Fire Brigade Reinforcements & Emergency Response
To combat the fierce blazes, the Greek government has mobilized an extensive emergency task force. More than 230 ground firefighters, backed by 53 specialized fire engines, 11 tactical units, and heavy water trucks, are operating across the island. Crucially, fire brigade reinforcements and specialized wildland units have been dispatched from Athens via military transport aircraft and overnight ferries to bolster local forces.
Although 10 water-dropping helicopters and air tankers were deployed, extreme turbulence and violent wind shears temporarily grounded aerial operations on Thursday morning. At sea, the Greek Coast Guard, supported by private boats and an EU Frontex patrol vessel, remains on high standby along the southern coastline to facilitate marine evacuations if land routes become compromised. Tragically, authorities confirmed two firefighter fatalities near Krya Vrysi after their crew became trapped by sudden wind shifts.
