Well, it happened again. There we were at a very nice seaside hotel not too far from Athens, minding our business in the lobby when all of a sudden they appeared: a mob of ladies in sundresses and gentlemen who we all know would rather be doing almost anything else, tied up in get-ups way too formal for this century.

The smiley crowd (and yes, too many smiles are annoying, just ask the French) then boarded a bus, leaving a perfume bomb in its wake that had us reaching for our Zyrtec. If you googled “explosion at Sephora”…

Another rather pricey idyll basically ruined by yet more nuptials. We know, we know: big weddings mean nice revenue for hotels. But it’s also giving “once you’ve already said goodbye to a wad of cash to get away from your noisy neighbor for a couple days, you really yearn to be treated like a member of the studio audience instead of the main character that you are.”

Fact is, there are two things that tend to ruin a high-end vacation vibe: 1) when someone drowns in the hotel pool (see Palm Springs, hotel drownings) or 2) arriving at a stunning luxury resort only to find the entire infinity pool cordoned off for an over-the-top, deeply cringe destination wedding.

You wanted to sit back, enjoy a crisp drink with your main crew, and vibe out in your hotel room in absolute peace. Instead, you’re subjected to an army of matching bridesmaids, basic-tier pop music echoing through the corridors, and a horde of drunk relatives occupying every square inch of common space.

Also, come on, marriage? In this or frankly any economy? Gay, straight, or somewhere in between, Statistically speaking, it’s a fast track to messy legal drama, financial ruin, or terminal ennui. If you want to bypass the bourgeois theater entirely—along with the acoustic covers of Ed Sheeran—you need to escape to islands where large-scale weddings are functionally impossible.

So forget Mykonos, Santorini, Crete, Kos, or Corfu. Those places are overrun with honeymooners, corporate mega-resorts, and basic couples looking for identical Instagram backdrops. We are blacklisting any destination that boasts a Marriott, a Hilton, or a massive banquet hall. Instead, we’ve curated six incredible, understated Greek islands that are perfect for single travelers, independent bachelors, and anyone who values pure, unadulterated solitude over bouquet tosses. These spots feature zero massive hotel chains, minimal infrastructure for crowds, and a distinct lack of basic romance propaganda.

1. Syros

You can spend your evenings drinking artisanal cocktails at a local lounge, wandering through the melancholic, winding alleys of Ano Syros, or hitting up local rebetiko gigs without tripping over a tulle skirt. 2. Nisyros

If there is an island that actively repels the traditional wedding crowd, it’s Nisyros. This place is literally an active volcano. Sikinos is one of the most neglected islands in the Cyclades, which is exactly why it’s perfect. The Chora is one of the most authentic and un-spoiled villages in Greece, perched high on a cliffside.

Because there are so few hotels, accommodating a large group is a statistical impossibility.
