REVEALED: We Found the Haute Greek Resort Taylor Swift Needs to Write Into Her Next "Blank Space"
The Danai in Halkidiki is a family-owned resort on a quiet peninsula in northern Greece
Halkidiki, Greece — The Danai, the family-owned luxury resort on the Sithonia peninsula of Halkidiki, is now open for its 50th season, a milestone in the story of the Riefenstahl family and a property that marks this landmark anniversary by looking both forward and inward, unveiling new chapters while staying true to its roots.
The story began in 1975, when the Halkidiki peninsula was largely untouched. Plots by the sea held the least value at the time, their worth determined by the quality of olive trees rather than proximity to the water. Between the villages of Nikiti and Metamorfosis on the quietest of the peninsula’s three fingers, Danai and her husband Otto Riefenstahl, a native of Berlin, acquired a green plot of land and opened their guesthouse “House Danai” in the summer of 1976 with four rooms furnished with brick-built beds, supplies arriving by horse and cart from the village.
Over five decades, those four rooms became 56 individually crafted suites and villas. Kimon Riefenstahl now leads The Danai as Managing Director in the second generation, following in the footsteps of his parents. The bond with the local community endures: several families from the area have been part of the hotel’s story across generations.
In collaboration with London-based design studio Muza Lab, The Danai has now reimagined its coveted Pool Suites, Main Pool, and 375-meter private beach, bringing a refined new aesthetic to a property that has quietly defined luxury hospitality in northern Greece for half a century.
The Pool Suites
Available as one-bedroom retreats or two-bedroom family configurations, the Pool Suites have long been among The Danai’s most sought-after accommodations. The new interiors draw directly from the natural world surrounding the property: white-painted wood, woven raffia, and natural stone bring in the simplicity of the Mediterranean coast, while olive leaf motifs are carved into bespoke gesso panels behind the headboards. Each suite is draped in either deep teal or coral. The teal points to both the Aegean and the olive groves in a single gesture, carrying the calm of the outdoors inside. Coral brings warmth, vitality, and the Greek spirit of Philoxenia, a welcoming love of strangers.
Details throughout are layered and considered: custom selenite bedside tables and alabaster table lamps with rope hoop fringe on the shades, full-height mirrors by Porta Romana that blur the line between furniture and sculpture, mini bars clad in crushed mother of pearl that catch and shift with the light throughout the day, and embroidered curtains that bring a handmade intimacy, as though chosen for a private house.
The bathrooms have been completely transformed, with a pale, veined stone finish accented by Cipollino Verde, a forest-dark green marble whose fluid markings echo the movement of water over rock. Stone vanities with stepped details and bespoke etched mirrors are paired with clear blown-glass wall sconces, delicate against the solidity of the stone.
The Main Pool and Beach
Beyond the suites, The Danai’s Main Pool has been redesigned with custom mosaics in teal and white, their pattern inspired by the handcrafted weave of a basket. The surrounding stone border in Gaya Quartzite carries the grey-green palette of the olive groves through to the water’s edge. Outdoor dining chairs are upholstered in seafoam green, and local pottery has been repainted in The Danai’s signature teals, grounding the terraces in a craft tradition that long predates tourism. The 375-meter private beach has also been refreshed for the season.
Bird Yachting Co. Welcomes Birdie
This spring, The Danai’s yacht fleet welcomes its newest vessel: Birdie, a 48-foot Princess flybridge designed for couples. With a private cabin for two, a sun deck at the bow, a seating area at the stern, and a panoramic flybridge deck, Birdie traces the turquoise waters of the Diaporos Islands and the dramatic coastline of UNESCO-listed Mount Athos, where dolphins are often spotted circling the peninsula.
Guests embark from the harbor of Latoura or directly from their own hotel or private villa along the Halkidiki coastline, welcomed on board with an aperitif. SeaBobs, paddleboards, and snorkelling gear are included, alongside a wine list handpicked by The Danai’s Head Sommelier from Greece’s largest private wine collection. Birdie joins her sisters The Bird, an 82-foot Sanlorenzo, and The Blue Bird at 60 feet, together forming the Bird Yachting Co. fleet.
For families, The Blue Bird and The Bird offer up to four cabins and a multi-day Mamma Mia! route through the Sporades archipelago, known from the silver screen, with voyages spanning three days to several weeks.

From an idyllic guesthouse to one of the most distinguished luxury retreats in Greece and Europe, The Danai stands for continuity, craftsmanship, and a family vision that was given half a century to grow.
