The Dangerous Legitimacy Gamble at the Delphi Economic Forum
Why is Greece’s most prestigious international forum treating far-right Breitbart operatives like actual journalists?
MONTECITO, Calif. — As America celebrates its semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of a nation founded on the bedrock of a free and principled press—we are forced to confront a disturbing global trend: the flattening of the media landscape where toxic political operations are increasingly being passed off as legitimate journalism.
A prime example unfolded recently at the Delphi Economic Forum in Greece. This prestigious international gathering, much like the World Economic Forum in Davos, is designed to bring together serious thinkers, policymakers, and journalists to debate the world’s most pressing challenges. Yet, the forum extended a speaking invitation to an affiliate of the Breitbart News Network.
Why would they do that?
Let’s be entirely clear about what Breitbart is. It is not a news organization. It is a bogus journalistic entity that functions as a highly partisan propaganda arm for the MAGA wing of the Republican Party. It does not employ traditional journalists bound by ethics and objectivity; it employs political operatives.
While I stop short of calling for a heavy-handed, outright ban on who can speak globally, it is entirely within the bounds of a robust free press to call out this charade for what it is. In my view, Breitbart, alongside a handful of other far-right outlets, operates in a manner tantamount to the modern digital equivalent of historic propaganda ministries—using relentless sensationalism, distortion, and ideological warfare to manipulate public consciousness.
When international forums invite Breitbart to the table, they aren’t engaging in a healthy debate across the political spectrum. They are conferring a dangerous veneer of legitimacy upon an organization that fundamentally does not deserve it.
Confronted by this deeply dismaying decision, I wrote directly to the director of the Delphi Economic Forum, Symeon Tsomokos, to challenge the inclusion of this outlet. The core of that message underscores the broader danger facing democratic discourse:
“As an American and as a journalist, I find it deeply dismaying that the prestigious Delphi Economic Forum would have extended an invitation to the so-called ‘Breitbart News’—which is not a news organization. It is widely recognized in the United States as an ideological commentary site that uses sensationalism to push a far-right agenda, rather than a reliable source for objective news.
As such, it neither reflects American nor democratic values and should have no wider platform either in my country, or overseas. In our view, inviting them or any of its staffers to speak at the Forum was a mistake that should not be repeated. The danger here is in legitimizing what is really a fake news site.
Furthermore, nobody affiliated with ‘Breitbart’ has ever won any credible journalism awards—some of the biographical information you have published on your website is frankly false.
As I am covering this unfortunate invitation for legitimate news outlets here in California, I have already contacted Breitbart, as per journalistic custom, so as to give them an opportunity to respond. They have not, but then, they are not actual journalists but a political operation.
However, I will do the same for you, with one question: Why would you give any platform to a dodgy website that is not respected in the United States and that is widely recognized as an ideological commentary site that uses sensationalism to push a far-right agenda?”
As most Americans who don’t presently occupy or otherwise regularly frequent the White House know, an “award” from a hyper-partisan think tank is not an award. An “honor” conferred on someone at CPAC or wherever is not an honor. In any event, to date, Breitbart has maintained its characteristic silence. True journalists answer tough questions about their credibility; political operations retreat when their credentials are scrutinized.
The defense often raised by organizers of these forums is one of “intellectual diversity” or “representing all viewpoints.” But there is a grand canyon of difference between a conservative viewpoint and a calculated propaganda campaign. True journalism requires a baseline adherence to verifiable facts and a dedication to truth-seeking. Breitbart’s ruses fail on both counts.
No doubt there is also an unspoken urge to curry favor with the current administration — after all, Breitbart even more than Fox News is the mouthpiece of the dundering Trump administration. But then, does CNN’s Kaitlan Collins curry favor with this White House? No. And she gets insulted by this White House for not doing so, and yet, miraculously, both still does her job and still gets a primo spot at every White House press conference.
With the exception of most diehard MAGA f*tards, people actually respect a little something called integrity.
On this milestone anniversary of American democracy, we must remember that a free press is only as strong as our willingness to defend its standards. When elite international conferences treat political ops as peers to legitimate journalists, they actively degrade the global information ecosystem. If we value truth, democratic values, and institutional integrity, Breitbart’s entry into these prestigious forums must be strenuously questioned—and ultimately rejected.
Happy 4th! 🎆🇺🇸
